Scottsdale sees snow as opportunity, uses BuzzFeed to reach East Coasters

As the East Coast digs out of a record snowstorm, Valley residents are literally basking in the sunshine.

The Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau has used the East Coast gloom as an opportunity to attract visitors to the Northeast Valley.

The Scottsdale CVB’s warm weather campaign has targeted Chicago, New York and Canada for a while now, but for the first time, the CVB has partnered with one of the biggest game-changers in media: BuzzFeed.

“When residents in those areas face cold, harsh winter weather, we like to remind them that Scottsdale offers visitors warmth and sunshine this time of year,” said CVB representatives.

The CVB posted three sponsored articles on BuzzFeed’s website: “ Desert sunsets that are so gorgeous they must be fake,” “ 12 ways you’re completely wrong about the desert,” and “ 13 reasons why a Scottsdale winter is better than yours.”

All three are posted in classic BuzzFeed style, with short sentences, lists and large photos.

According to the CVB, the posts — which went live two weeks ago — have already generated more than 92,000 views.

CVB began talks with BuzzFeed about the sponsored content last year.
